Fence as Barrier (2011)

Observation: Rubbish floats in and out of the homes in Makoko. Some like to trap the rubbish beneath their homes as it encourages silt to build up, affording them the opportunity to sandfill their plot. Also, almost everyone gets in and out of the canoe by stepping on uneven bits of wood or onto the platforms directly. Is there a safer way to do so?

Proposal: Making a fence out of bamboo, a material readily available to the community. The fence will act as a barrier to keep rubbish in or out, depending on the preference of the inhabitants. Also, the fence will double as a step ladder, providing a safer way to climb in and out of the canoes.
