This thesis was developed to be a sensitive response to formal, informal, functional and environmental parameters by creating a new layout for Makoko without causing massive disruption to the inhabitants. The scheme re-organised, integrated and empowered a water based community in an attempt to elevate their status. As water structures the way in which the community works, the proposal sought to explore and identify a number of processes which make Makoko a habitable environment.

Due to the complex nature of the site, the proposal was deveoped in three stages:

1. The upgrade of existing housing conditions as well as the integration of small scale tactics aimed at the improvement of community life.

2. Infrastructural development.

3. The construction of a large market including a fish dock and aquaculture area with fish smoking facilities for Makoko and neighbouring communities.
